Indian summers can get pretty unbearable and nothing short of the cool breeze from an air conditioner can keep us happy.

To find the best ac in India in the 2-ton category, we scoured data published by Consumer Voice  - a forum started by a group of academicians and professionals who have been spreading awareness about consumer rights since 1983. We also looked at other websites for their suggestions on the best 2-ton air conditioner in India.

We also visited three large multi-brand dealers, Pai Electronics, Adishwar and Reliance Digital to get into the mind of an air conditioner-buying customer. Having spent over 14 hours over the past year researching air conditioners we have found three of the best ones you can find in the market.

Why Trust Us?

A 2-ton air conditioner is a very large appliance and we found fewer worthy products than in the other AC sizes. To find the best air conditioner in the 2-ton category proved more difficult than any other tonnage.

Most website suggestions for the best air conditioner were pretty limited and such products were often out of stock and outdated. Hence we concentrated on Amazon and Flipkart picks. Here too there weren't many reviewed products at the most we had 10-15 product reviews.

So using our prior knowledge and data from Consumer Voice’s air conditioner buying guide we picked all Air Conditioners that had Inverter technology with Copper Condenser, 3+ Star BEE rating (2018) and Dehumidifier function.

To further understand the product and the market we paid a visit to three separate home appliances dealers- Pai Electronics, Adishwar and Reliance Digital. Here we sought to understand what people look for in an Air Conditioner and what are the must-have features.

We also read and analyzed the best sellers on Amazon and Flipkart to help find the best air conditioner for you.

How we selected?

While searching for the best ac in India we found that most website’s picks were either not available or out of stock. Not satisfied with this we decided to search on Amazon and Flipkart. There were actually not many 2-ton air conditioners and the highly rated ones had only 10-15 reviews.

Using what we had learned from Consumer Voice’s air conditioner buying guide we selected those air conditioners that had at least a 3 star (2018) rating, a copper condenser with inverter technology and a Dehumidifier function.

We also spoke to large home appliances dealers to understand which brands offer the best service and which brands consumers prefer so as to select picks that people will actually buy.

How to choose the best air conditioner- inputs from the dealers

After meeting with the popular home appliances dealers; Reliance Digital, Adishwar and Pai Electronics we sought to understand what people are buying and what a new customer must look for to have the best air conditioner.

The first advice that the dealerships gave was to understand the size of your room properly as a smaller air conditioner for a large room will not work efficiently while a large-sized ac for a small room will be overkill. Read our ”What size AC for whom?” section below to know more.

Continuing on efficiency the dealerships did insist (especially for the 2-ton air conditioners) on purchasing inverter based air conditioners as they offer not only better energy savings, but also quieter and faster operation along with a stabilizer free operation which is a boon for everyone.

Lastly, the salespeople said that even if they are pricier make sure you go for a higher star-rated (BEE) product as well as one with a higher ISEER value. This will significantly help reduce your annual power consumption. To understand what BEE and ISEER are read our “What are BEE Star ratings and ISEER?” section below.

Best Pick in detail

The Panasonic 2 Ton AC

Pros

  • Inverter technology saves a lot of electricity

  • Uses copper condenser for faster cooling

  • Has the latest 2018 BEE 5 star rating

  • An ISEER value higher than 4.5

  • 9-year compressor warranty

Cons

  • Price is a little steep

  • No heating function

If you are in the market for the best 2-ton ac than look no further than the Panasonic Inverter AC. It comes with a 5 star 2018 BEE rating, 2 stage air purification, 4-way aero swing and quick cooling.

It doesn't look any different than the other air conditioners but it has some rather unique features. First, is the PM 2.5 filter that helps to make sure you get clean fresh air. This is particularly helpful if you live in a polluted city. The 4-way aero swing feature directs air in all the directions uniformly allowing faster cooling.

pretty white remote control to the Panasonic 2 Ton AC

The main specifications are similar to almost all the other air conditioners like the inverter technology that runs the compressor at different speeds to save power, the copper condenser that helps to cool faster, the R410A refrigerant which is extremely safe for the environment. Despite its 2 ton capacity, the Panasonic Air Conditioner has a 5-star BEE rating with an ISEER value higher than 4.5.

The 2-ton size makes it perfect for room sizes of around 180-240 sq. feet.

The built-in humidifier also continuously checks for humidity and heat thus ensuring you get refreshingly cool air.

The AC comes with a 1-year warranty on the product and 9-year warranty on the compressor. The initial installation is approximately Rs.1500-2000. Doorstep service is offered on the air conditioner as with all other brands. Panasonic even offers On-Site service and we personally have received great service from Panasonic before.

At around Rs.55,990 it's not exactly a cheap air conditioner but given its performance and capacity, we feel if you need one of the best inverter ac in India than get this.

The LG 2 ton AC

Pros

  • Dual Inverter technology saves electricity

  • Uses copper condenser for faster cooling

  • An ISEER value higher of 3.70

  • 9-year compressor warranty

  • Has a display on the main unit

  • Useful Himalaya cooling function

  • Useful glow in the dark remote buttons

Cons

  • Priciest amongst that listed here

  • No heating function

In the 2-ton air conditioner market, LG offers a great alternative to the already incredible Panasonic Inverter AC. While it cannot match the Panasonic's 5 star 2018 BEE rating, it does come with some rather useful features starting with the Dual Inverter technology.

The design of the air conditioner is certainly not something you’ll take a second look at, but still, it is simple and doesn't draw too much attention to itself. What is really thoughtfully designed is the remote. The remote is not only small like a phone and comes with its own dock but is also well laid out for easier operation and even has glow in the dark buttons for using it at night.

Dual Inverter as we said before is the latest innovation in inverter technology which enables the air conditioner to run at a much wider range of speeds allowing for faster as well as more efficient cooling.

The next trick LG has up its sleeve is the Himalaya Cool feature which our dealers said was a favourite amongst customers. This feature lets you instantly bring down the temperature to its set value as soon as the unit is turned on. This gives you chilling air without having to wait for it.

The remote controller: LG 2 AC

Other specifications of the LG are similar to the other products we have listed like the copper condenser that helps to cool faster, the R410A refrigerant which is extremely safe for the environment. There’s also a built-in humidifier which continuously checks for humidity and heat thus ensuring you get refreshingly cool air.

There is no heating function which is surprising missing on all three of the air conditioners we selected. On asking our dealers about this, they said at least in India that feature is not common and most consumers are more bothered about fast and efficient cooling and not heating.

The LG Dual Inverter AC comes with a 1-year warranty on the product and 10-year warranty on the compressor. The initial installation is approximately Rs.1500-2000. Doorstep service is offered on the air conditioner as with all other brands.

The dealers we spoke to had only nice things to say about LG service and they simply put it as the best service (along with Samsung) when it came to home appliances.

Priced at Rs.56,990 the LG is no doubt the most expensive air conditioner here, but be on the lookout for some discounts as its prices go down to Rs.46,000. But even then the quality components, the brand, service and the customer-centric features of the air conditioner surely make it one of the if not the best inverter ac in India.

Pure White Hitachi 2 ton AC

Pros

  • Inverter technology saves a lot of electricity

  • Uses copper condenser for faster cooling

  • 4 star 2018 BEE rating (ISEER 4.15)

  • 5-year compressor warranty

  • Has dehumidifier function

  • Works without stabilizer

Cons

  • No led display

  • Slightly noisy

  • No heating function

If the Panasonic and LG Inverter Air Conditioners are a little too out of your budget you can look at the next best product that is the Hitachi Air Conditioner. The Hitachi air conditioner focuses on cooling more than features.

It comes with a copper condenser and inverter technology just like the Panasonic Air Conditioner but it is slightly less efficient. Its 4-star BEE rating (2018) and  ISEER of 4.15 are lower than the Panasonic’s 5-star rating and 4.5+ ISEER but its still better than most other Air Conditioners with only 3-star ratings.

The AC remote control for Hitachi 2 ton AC

In terms of features, you get a dust filter, a dehumidifier, and a remote. We mention remote specifically as it is the only way to know the AC’s temperature as the main unit doesn't have a led display. Other small niggles include a slightly louder fan.

The warranty on the product is of 1 year and 5 years on the compressor. The standard installation costs Rs.1599. The installation costs were mentioned upfront which is very useful. Also, there is an on-site service offered for your convenience.

Priced at around Rs.49,990 it is significantly cheaper than the Panasonic Air Conditioner and boasts of fast cooling and good energy saving which makes it one of the best inverter ac in India in the budget 2-ton segment.

After Sales Service

Panasonic offers 1 year of warranty on the product and 9 years on the compressor. They charge somewhere between Rs.1500-2000 for the first installation and home service is provided. We personally received great service form Panasonic during our Led TV review, where their technician was extremely knowledgeable and helpful.

LG offers a 1-year warranty on the product and a 10-year compressor and condenser warranty.  They charge around Rs.1500-2000 for the installation but doorstep service is provided by the brand.

Hitachi offers a 1-year warranty on the product and a 5-year compressor warranty. They charge Rs.1599 for installing the AC and offer on-site service.

Who is our best pick for?

If you have a large room of around 180-240 sq. feet than the Panasonic 2 ton inverter AC will be perfect to cool it quickly. It's 5-star rating and high ISEER value will also keep the electricity bills low.

The LG air conditioner meanwhile is priced similar to the Panasonic, but you get some really useful features that allow are instant cooling while keeping the energy consumption low.

But if you need a more affordable air conditioning solution for the same room size, the Hitachi 2 ton inverter AC will suit you better. Despite its lower price, it comes with a 4-star rating and an ISEER value of 4.15.

What size AC for whom?

If you are confused as to what tonnage of AC is required for what room size we have compiled a useful guide to show you the same.

  • A room with a size of less than 100 sq. feet will need a 0.8 ton AC

  • A room of 120 -140 sq. feet size will need a 1 ton AC

  • A room of 150-180 sq. feet size needs a 1.5 ton AC

  • A room of 180 -240 sq. feet size need a 2 ton AC

Think that the 2-ton air conditioners we recommend above may be a little large for your room? Not to worry, check out our best 1.5-ton air conditioner article and best 1-ton air conditioner article to find the perfect air conditioner for your home.

Advantages of an Inverter AC

Inverter technology air conditioners vary their speeds/power to regulate the temperature compared to usual air conditioners which resort to simply switching the compressor on and off. For example, think of the Inverter AC as a fan regulator with 5 speeds, you can adjust it according to your liking while a normal air conditioner is like a fan with the only on-off switch- it is either off or fully on. Based on the data on power consumption by BEE, Inverter ACs of BEE 3 star ratings are about 7% more energy efficient than BEE 5 star rated non-inverter ACs.

Modern air conditioners from LG even carry Dual inverter technology to further reduce noise and improve the speed of cooling.

What are BEE Star ratings and ISEER?

When we talked to the dealers over at Reliance Digital, Pai electronics and Adishwar we came across an interesting observation by the sales personnel over there. They informed us that while purchasing an air conditioner people had their usual demands of optimum size, high value, fast cooling but were also interested in machines with high BEE and ISEER rating. While the awareness is appreciated this was not the interesting bit we are talking about, rather the sales people told us that while people insist on star rating they have absolutely no idea what it means. Instead many believe it refers to a review rating given by some test agency. So we came up with this dedicated section to help the customer really understand what it means.

BEE ratings are handed over to home appliances and electronics by a government agency to help the public understand which machine is more energy-efficient. A higher star rating (5 star) usually means a higher energy saving and this rating system is constantly updated. So make sure you also look at the year the rating was awarded as a 5-star 2017 rating is, in fact, a 3-star 2018 rating due to the revisions made.

For a long time, BEE has stuck to giving star ratings to home appliances based on their performances under a test load. But for Air Conditioners they have redone their rating system and introduced the ISEER System in accordance to international standards. What ISEER does is considered a variation in temperature at different times of the year hence an ISEER rating is much more realistic. The ISEER value is a ration of the amount of heat removed annually divided by the total amount of power consumed annually. A higher ISEER number denotes higher efficiency of the machine.

While we were testing refrigerators we witnessed something peculiar when we found a lower star rated fridge offering better power efficiency than a 5 star rated one. Read more about such flaws in the BEE labelling system in our Best Single Door Refrigerator in India.

Final Thoughts

If you seek the best inverter ac in the 2-ton category than the Panasonic AC with fit your bill perfectly. It has the highest BEE star rating of 5 stars, cools quickly, has good features and comes with great warranty and service.

The LG air conditioners boast of an even more modern dual inverter technology, a fast cooling mode aptly named Himalaya Cool and an easy to use remote. All of that is backed by LG’s great after sales service and long warranty on the compressor.
