Winter is something that fears the many in Westeros, but in India what puts fear in our minds are the hot summers. The solution then is an Air Conditioner.

To rid you of sweat and uneasiness of the hot summers we set about finding the best ac in India.

We started by reading on Consumer Voice, a group of academicians and professionals who have been spreading awareness about consumer rights since 1983. We then shortlisted some of the best selling products on Amazon and Flipkart followed by some best picks of other websites.

Best Inverter AC in India

Godrej 1 Ton 5 Star Inverter Split AC

With a 5-star energy saving, Stabilizer free operation and Inverter technology the Godrej 1 Ton AC makes for a great pick for its price

Best Budget 1 Ton AC

Carrier 1 Ton 5 Star BEE Rating 2017 Split AC

The Carrier 1 ton AC is one of the highest reviewed AC on Flipkart and for good reason it is reasonably priced, comes with a dehumidifier and a 5 star rating as well. While it does lack inverter technology as the Godrej it still is very efficient in cooling.

Best Budget 1 Ton AC

Midea 1 Ton Split AC

If you need an air conditioner for a budget price than the Midea 1 ton makes great since it has decent cooling and even earns itself a 3-star BEE rating.  It sadly is not an inverter type but makes up for it with its unbelievably low price.

Why Trust Us?

We understand how bad heat can get so we made sure we find the best air conditioner for your needs.

When we set to find the best picks we saw most websites suggested ACs that were either unavailable or had long been outdated. So we started by searching for the best air conditioners on Amazon and Flipkart. This was a useful step as we did not rely on what websites said but rather picked based on what the Indian public already tested and liked. This gave us insights into the delivery, installation woes, service and maintenance and reliability.

We relied on data from e-commerce websites as well. Consumer Voice’s buying guide came in very handy allowing us to assess and pick the best products.

How we selected?

We started by finding what most other websites suggest for Air Conditioners. We saw most of them suggesting around 10 different products which can actually confuse a potential buyer. Furthermore, we saw most suggestions online were of products that were for long have been out of stock and permanently unavailable.

We then focused our research drawing insight from E-commerce websites. Here we found a lot of highly reviewed and highly rated products. We then set about picking the ones which had the best ratings, highest BEE ratings, Copper condensers, other additional features and great price.

Best Pick in detail

Pros:

  • Inverter technology saves a lot of electricity

  • Uses copper condenser for faster cooling

  • Has the latest 2018 BEE 5 star rating

  • ISEER value of 4.55

  • 7-year compressor warranty

Cons:

  • No dehumidifier

  • No heating function

While the design of the Godrej Air Conditioner is nothing extraordinary, as an Air Conditioner, it is quite cool. It comes with the latest inverter technology that lets the compressor run at different speeds and power which saves power. Regular Split AC’s have the compressor in either max power or completely off which is a lot less efficient. The Inverter technology earns the Godrej a high ISEER rating of 4.55 and a 5-star BEE rating (2018).

The copper condenser helps the AC cool much faster than regular Aluminium condenser ACs. Verified reviews from customers on Amazon and Flipkart also confirmed that the AC cools the room within no time. The four-way swing feature ensures the cold air is delivered in all directions uniformly. Godrej claims the AC can provide cooling of up to 16 degrees Celsius. The 1 ton size makes the AC sufficient for rooms of sizes around 120 -140 sq. feet

The Godrej AC is also designed to run without a stabilizer which is very convenient.  For further convenience the AC comes with a 3 layer dampening material to keep the compressor noise to a minimum. Even cooler is the i-Sense technology which uses sensors placed in the remote (placed near you) to check for temperature and adjust the AC accordingly.

Coming to environment friendliness the AC uses R-410A refrigerant which has zero potential to damage the ozone layer. Also to keep your health in check the AC has hydrophobic protection on the evaporators to prevent the formation of bacteria and in turn give your fresh, clean air.

But not everything is rosy on the Godrej AC, it lacks any dehumidification feature which was present in our budget picks. There isn’t any heating option and as few users pointed out, the remote lacks glow in the dark buttons.

The AC comes with a 1-year warranty on the product and 7-year warranty on the compressor. The initial installation is free but users did report that they were charged for clamps and drain pipes. Godrej also provides doorstep service for the Air Conditioners.

Priced at around Rs.35,000 the Godrej AC with its modern technology, energy savings, and cool features is no less than one of the best inverter ac in India.

Best Budget 1 Ton AC- In Detail

Pros:

  • Value for money price

  • Uses copper condenser for faster cooling

  • EER value of 4 (5 stars 2017)

  • 5-year compressor warranty

  • Has dehumidifier function

Cons:

  • No heating function

  • Non-inverter technology

  • Needs a stabilizer

The Carrier Split AC is a Flipkart exclusive and is one of the most popular AC online. With 4 stars and 6000+ ratings, this is one of the best ac in India currently. What makes this AC great is the blend of price and features.

Yes, it lacks the latest inverter technology but with an EER rating of 4, it still is pretty efficient. It also comes with a 5 star (2017) BEE rating. A whopping 79% of the certified buyers claimed they were satisfied with the energy efficiency of the AC and claimed to get low electricity costs.

The AC still uses a copper condenser for quick cooling and most verified users claimed the AC could cool the room to the set temperature in under 15 minutes. In terms of cooling the Carrier, AC had a 73% positive feedback from certified buyers.

The Carrier AC does come with a dehumidifying function to help you get rid of the mildew smell and humidity in the air during the rainy season. This was a feature that was absent on our best pick and we liked that the Carrier AC did add this feature.

The remote too as users reported is simple but cool, especially the glow in the dark buttons which is such a simple but genuinely useful feature. There are the regular set of features too like Led display, Dust filter, Bacteria Filter, Auto Swing etc. One particularly useful feature is if at all something goes wrong with the AC the machine itself will diagnose and tell you what's wrong with it. Like the Godrej, the Carrier AC too has the really cool feature that uses the remotes sensors to detect temperature and adjust the cooling.

You get the 1-year warranty on the AC along with 5 years warranty on the compressor. The installation is handled by Flipkart’s Jeeves technician. One thing we really appreciated in the service part was the transparency. On the product listing on Flipkart, they have clearly mentioned what qualifies as standard installation (which costs Rs.1599) and what are the extra charges that can occur during installation. Doorstep service is also offered after installation.

With a price of around Rs. 27,999 the Carrier 1 ton AC has pretty much all the necessary features you can expect and has great performance too. DUe to the great mix of price and features, the Carrier Ac is one of the best ac in India in the 1 ton non-inverter type AC category.

Pros:

  • Superb price

  • Uses copper condenser for faster cooling

  • 3 star 2018 BEE rating

  • 5-year compressor warranty

  • Has dehumidifier function

Cons:

  • No heating function

  • Non-inverter technology

  • Needs a stabilizer

  • No bacteria filter

The Midea Air Conditioner is similar in specifications to the Carrier AC (Do note that Carrier and Midea have a JV in India). The AC loses out on some features like Bacteria filter, has a lesser ISEER rating but also comes with a price tag of around Rs.20999. This is a massive saving over the other two AC’s despite that, the Midea AC still uses a Copper condenser, has a dehumidifier, includes the cool remote and even gets a 3 star (2018) rating.

Customers were very satisfied with the cooling and features on the AC with an 84% positive feedback on the cooling performance of the AC.

The warranty of 1 year on the product and 5 years on the compressor and installation costs of Rs.1599 are exactly the same as the Carrier AC. Add to that the low price and this is easily one the best budget ac in India.

After Sales Service

The Godrej AC comes with 1-year product warranty and 7-year compressor warranty. The installation is free and on-site service is provided for any issues.

The Carrier and Midea AC’s come with the 1-year product and 5-year compressor warranty. They have paid installation of Rs.1599 and they too offer on-site service.

Who is our best pick for?

The Godrej AC is based on inverter technology and will work with most rooms within the 140 sq. feet area. It is also designed to be more efficient despite cooling much faster hence it can work well even in hot areas.

The Carrier and Midea AC’s are very similar to each other in terms of specifications and their dehumidifier feature lets you can use them in humid places like Mumbai and Chennai. Their lack of inverter technology does need more electricity but they are still pretty efficient in most conditions.

What size AC for whom?

If you are confused as to what tonnage of AC is required for what room size we have compiled a useful guide to show you the same.

  • A room with size less than 100 sq. feet needs a 0.8 ton AC

  • A room with 120 -140 sq. feet needs a 1 ton AC

  • A room with 150-180 sq. feet needs a 1.5 ton AC

  • A room with 180 -240 sq. feet needs a 2 ton AC

Advantages of an Inverter AC

Inverter technology air conditioners vary their speeds/power to regulate the temperature compared to usual air conditioners which resort to simply switching the compressor on and off. For example, think of the Inverter AC as a fan regulator with 5 speeds, you can adjust it according to your liking while a normal air condition is like a fan with the only on-off switch it is either off or full on. Based on the data on power consumption by BEE, Inverter ACs of BEE 3 star ratings are about 7% more energy efficient than BEE 5 star rated non-inverter ACs.

BEE Star ratings and ISEER

For long time BEE has stuck to giving star ratings to home appliances based on their performances under a test load. But for Air Conditioners they have redone their rating system and introduced the ISEER System in accordance to international standards. What ISEER does is considered a variation in temperature at different times of the year hence an ISEER rating is much more realistic. The ISEER value is a ration of the amount of heat removed annually divided by the total amount of power consumed annually. A higher ISEER number denotes higher efficiency of the machine.

Final Thoughts

If you need one of the best inverter ac in India in the 1 ton category looks no further than the Godrej 1 ton inverter ac. It cools very fast, saves a lot of electricity while doing so and is priced very well for a 5 star rated inverter AC.

But if you don't want to spend a lot on the inverter technology and a regular split AC works for you, you can pick the Carrier 1 ton AC which we feel is one of the best ac in India in the non-inverter category. It brings a dehumidifier option, includes a cool and useful remote feature and has fast cooling as well.

If you want the same experience as the Carrier AC but for a much lower price then pick the Midea AC. It comes with similar features as the Carrier AC but costs only around Rs.20999.
