A hair dryer allows for hot or cold air to blow out of the nozzle allowing you to dry your hair instantly, add to it the fact that you can use it with proper combs and stuff to even style your hair. But are hair dryers safe to use?
While experts suggest you shouldn’t always expose your hair to hot air, we have made sure we’ve picked products that are safe on your scalp due to their features and design. But if you are worried, do check out our buying guide to know more details on safety.
When it comes to buying a hair dryer what you have to understand is a higher wattage rating will mean a hair dryer that heats up quickly. Also, one important feature to have is a cold shot option which blows cold air on your hair. This can be very helpful for people who are not too comfortable blowing hot air on their heads. Read up more things to look for in a hair dryer in the buying guide section at the end.
Looking for a hair dryer can be a tedious process especially with the sheer number of products in the market. To help you find the best hair dryer we spent a day going through pouring over fashion and health websites to understand what features and attachments are necessary. We also looked at the health implications of the devices and what you must do to protect your hair.
Best Hair Dryer
Part of Wahl’s Professional series, the Wahl Super Dry is one of the most powerful hairdryers which features dedicated speed and temperature controls along with a useful cold shot button as well.
In the sea of hair dryers, the Wahl Super Dry feels like a breath of fresh air. Of all the dryers we inspected, it's not the cheapest or the best looking but it ticks all the rights boxes in terms of functionality. It was one of the most powerful hairdryers in the test, rated at 2000 W which means it will dry your hair quickly.
The Wahl Super Dry is part of Wahl’s professional range that is designed to be used by stylists and barbers.
What makes this hair dryer particularly useful is the high powered 2000W motor which when combined with the Tourmaline infused heating element makes it one of the best hair dryers around.
Tourmaline Hair Dryers are some of the most expensive ones in the market and they also cause very less hair damage, this is because they emit negative ions and infrared heat that dries hair from inside and prevents hair from frizzing up.
You also get separate speed and temperature settings which allows you to fine-tune the air that flows out of the dryer. You get two-speed settings that let you control the speed of the air flow, the Wahl Super Dry has a max airflow of 30m/s which in kmph is 108 kmph!! Now that's fast.
There are also three heat settings that let you control the temperature of the air flow. We loved the separate temperature and speed control as it really helps you to fine tune the air based on your needs.
Another feature we really loved is the dedicated cold shot button which gives you cold air to dry your hair as cold hair drying is considered much safer. Unlike a lot of other dryers which had a lot of negative reviews complaining about the ineffectiveness of the cold shot feature, the cold shot function on the Wahl Super Dry was actually found to work perfectly.
Also included in the box are three separate attachments; two concentrators and one diffuser. Many health websites suggested the use of the diffuser attachment over the concentrator nozzles because it doesn't let the hot air to be concentrated on one area of your scalp and will not damage your hair that much.
For easy usage, there is a long 3-meter power cord with a hanging hoop as well that lets you hook the Hair Dryer on a stand or frame, pretty convenient.
The Hair Dryer is a little bit on the heavier side weighing in at 630 gms (The competition weights around 450gms), we did find the hair dryers weight to be an issue with some people but considering the features and performance, it shouldn't be that big of a deal.
The Wahl Super Dry is a professional hair drying tool that is used by stylists and barbers. What makes it professional is the sheer level of control you have over the airflow, be it the temperature or the speed.
Apart from that the three different attachments which also include the diffuser attachments make it more capable than other hair dryers. So is it really just for professionals? Not really as the features are actually very helpful for most users and they will actually help protect your hair better than other hair dryers. But being heavy and the really long 3m cord will make it far less portable than say a foldable hair dryer like our budget pick, the Philips BHD006 Hair Dryer.
You also get a 1-year warranty, but we did not find any complaints about the product breaking down in any review that we read. At the time of writing this article, the product was priced around Rs.2399.
Powerful with quick drying
2-speed settings and 3 temperature settings
Has cold air option
3 different attachments
Long 3m power cord
A little heavy
Only 1-year warranty

Best Budget Hair Dryer
The Philips BHD006 is not as powerful or well equipped as the Wahl but it is much lighter, portable and more affordable. This makes it more suited for people who are always on the move and need to carry a hair dryer with them.
Don't let the pretty white and aqua shell fool you, it is quite powerful at 1600W and even comes with a cold air option. There is only one concentrator attachment, we would have preferred a diffuser attachment, but sadly none of the products at this price have that feature.
Compared to the Wahl hair dryer, the Philips only has 3 settings which combine both temperature and speed. You also get a decently long 1.8m cable.
While most of the reviews of the product were good with people finding no faults in the product even after 2 years of use many people did mention that the cool option doesn't give very cold air instead it's pretty warm.
The thing to note here is almost all products we shortlisted with cold shot option has this issue except the Wahl hair dryer where people actually said the cold shot option was very effective.
If you feel the Wahl trimmer is too professional and big for your needs then the Philips BHD006 might be a good bet for you. It is a cool, foldable lightweight hair dryer. While the Wahl separate controls are more useful, the Philips hairdryer is good for people who want a simple to use hair dryer which doesn't need a lot of fiddling.
At the time of writing this article, the product was priced around Rs.1299. and a really long 2-year warranty from Philips.
Light and foldable design
Reliable and powerful hair dryer
The cold shot mode is not very effective
Has combined temperature and speed settings
No diffuser attachment

Buying Guide to the best hair dryer machines
Before you buy yourself a hair dryer a key factor to consider is the wattage of the hair dryer. A hairdryer with higher wattage will heat faster and allow for faster drying of your hair. Make sure you pick a hair dryer with at least 1200W of power.
The type of material used is also important. While the budget hair dryers use metal heating coils which are not good in the long run as they can damage your hair. Ceramic, Tourmaline and Titanium materials are more efficient in heating and are much gentler on your hair.
Another small but important feature you must look is cold air shot function. We found that using hot air can damage your hair and hence many experts like Dr Michael Roizen suggested using hair dryers with cold air function which blows cold air on your hair to dry it.
While shortlisting products we came across many different features like Turbo Dry, Hair Protective Temperature, Quick Dry Nozzle upon reading in depth we found most of these are just fancy names gives to the stock attachments and the stock speed/ temperature settings found in most hair dryers. In fact, some of the Hair dryers with fancy features had complained about the ineffectiveness of the turbo mode or the attachments.
Are Hair Dryers safe to use?
Hair Dryers produce heat in order to dry your wet hair, many experts suggest doing this is harmful on a long-term basis. According to Dr. Michael Roizen, an award-winning American doctor Hair dryers produce extreme heat which over time can cause split ends, breakage and even brittle hair.
So what do experts suggest? Simply follow the below points to keep your hair healthy in the long run.
- Do not use the hot settings instead use the cold air setting. If you don't have cold air option use the least hot setting for the air flow.
- Keep the Hair Dryer as far as possible from your head while using
- Try and use a diffuser attachment and reduce your dependence on the concentrator attachments as they will heat a small portion of your hair and will spoil your hair
- Blow dry for some time and then let the remaining hair naturally dry or let your hair dry up naturally and then use the hair dryer. Do not use the hair dryer to fully dry your hair.

There are many hair dryers in the market, some from established brands while a few are unknown brands. Each product advertises itself as being good in something with a unique feature but we looked through all of them and found the two best performing hair dryers.
The Wahl Super Dry Hair Dryer is a professional grade hair dryer which gives you maximum control over the air as well as the airflow with the help of attachments. It is one of the most powerful hair dryers and is worth the price.
