Features offered on LG Machines
Turbo Drum washing
It is a cleaning process by which helps to achieve better cleaning by helping the water and detergent reach all the clothes and help all clothes to reach the scrub area for better stain removal. This is achieved by spinning the drum in clockwise and anti-clockwise direction, this helps the water and detergent reach the nooks and crannies of the clothes much better. Another advantage is this prevents tangling of clothes and hence cleaning delicates is much safer.
We did get to see the working of the Turbo drum feature on the washing machine we tested, where the bi-directional motion of the clothes really helps to wash the clothes gently.
It is a wash program which enables better detergent removal with the help of an extra rinse cycle. This is helpful for people who are allergic to detergent residue on their clothes.
Although our machine did have this feature even with normal washing we did feel any detergent residue was present on any clothes. We feel this feature will benefit people who have allergic reactions to detergents.
The stock washing program that determines the level of water and washing time required by measuring the laundry load.
Fuzzy logic is LG’s own invention where a group of sensors measure different parameters before deciding on the course of action, in this case it decides how much water, detergent to use and how long to wash the clothes based on the level of dirt.
Note: The same is present in the IFB machine as “Smart Sense” & Whirlpool machine as “Daily”,
This program sucks in air from the top vents to help dry the clothes faster during the fast spin cycle. This feature is particularly useful during rainy season.
In our tests we saw the Air Dry option did really dry the clothes much better than the usual spin cycle. Although you still have to dry the clothes for some time to achieve completely dry clothes.
Smart Diagnosis™ System
Smart Diagnosis is a feature present on most high-end LG machines. With this app you can actually detect if there is any issues with your washing machine. The machine gives out certain beeps which are recorded by the app and then it tells you ways by which you can troubleshoot the problems.
This feature is extremely useful if you are new to using washing machines, sadly our LG machine did not come with this feature so we couldn't give it a try.
Inverter Control machines come with a brushless DC motor which is much smaller and consumes much less electricity compared to the regular Induction motor used on most machines. The motor can also vary its speed depending on the load thus saving electricity.
Smart Inverter Control machines are reserved for High-end top load loads and front load machines only.
Apart from the above mentioned features most LG machines come with the usual set of features like Child Lock, delay wash etc. One thing we noticed in the LG machine we tested was that it had fewer programs than the WHirlpool and IFB machines, also there was no separate program for heavy loads. However you can select the Fuzzy program and then select the SOAK 60 program to get better cleaning in soiled clothes. Installation, Warranty and AMC
Once the order is placed online, an installation of the product has to be done by the company. This installation is done free of cost (Except for extra accessories like a longer pipe, tap adapter) by the company and a service person is sent to your house within 24 hours of delivery.
LG meanwhile has a tie up with FLipkart’s Jeeves service which does the installation work. The person sent over was however knowledgeable about the product and one time.
We did a little digging around for customer response to service from some of the top rated products of each brand. We found very few reviews where people mentioned bad service on the part of LG, which mostly was limited to the installation delays. However there were not many issues of the product over a long term.
However if something does go wrong most of the washing machine parts are covered by a 2 year warranty along with 10 years of warranty for the motor. However parts like the control panel, knobs, lint filters, wheels, top window are not covered under warranty. For the parts that are covered under warranty you have to still bear the labour charges.
Taking about part replacements., the clutch is said to be an extremely rare issue, while the common issues are caused due to overloading, electrical issues and water related issues. Post warranty you can source the same parts from 3rd party suppliers who claim they use original parts in most cases.
In order to simplify the maintenance process you can buy an AMC program. With AMC, the company periodically sends over a technician to check your machines health and the labour charges are also waived off on any part replacements. The LG washing machine had the lowest AMC costs (Rs.3000 for 3 years) compared to the others and also the fact that Jeeves can service the product means you may not have to wait a long time for your spares.
Overall we felt LG had a good service coverage and had a much faster service response than IFB.
What will be the Water and Electricity Costs incurred?
Most washing machines fill the drum based on the weight of the clothes. Now if we assume you are going to fill the drum with clothes and the washing machine will take max amount of water, then based on the working where the machine takes in water three times during each wash.
The water usage for a 6.2kg machine will be 195 litres/ day. Using the machine 5 days a week for a month will give you a bill of approximately Rs.140 per month.
The drum capacity of the LG is 65 litres and at max loading condition the machines uses upto 65 litres of water.
These machines need a continuous water supply and cannot be filled manually.
All water charges are considered for the city of Bangalore.
Given the small size we feel the water consumption for the LG machine was quite high. Click here to read about how the Whirlpool and IFB machines perform.
For electricity usage we have two different considerations.
1) If your house doesn't have a lot of electronic gadgets and you fall in the 100 unit slab then if we consider a usage time of 1 hour 30 minutes per day for a month.
The assuming the machine uses 325W per hour and the price per unit for the 100-unit slab is Rs.4.7 than you can expect a monthly bill of Rs.55 for using the washing machine.
2) But if you already have a lot of electronic items in your house and your heavy electricity usage means you fall in the 200-unit slab. Than the same washing machine under the same usage conditions as 100-units will give you a bill of Rs.73/ month if we consider the 200-unit slab to be priced at Rs.6.25/ unit
The above value are approximate for the LG T7208TDDLM 6.2kg machine we tested and reviewed
All slab rates are considered for the city of Bangalore
Our Thoughts and Suggestions on the LG washing machines
When we reviewed washing machines we saw the LG washing machine was a very compact one that had decent features and consumed less electricity too. We liked the service and pricing too and it ended up becoming our best budget recommendation.
Given the credibility of LG in the home appliance business and the good reviews online we can safely say the LG washing machine will be a valuable companion for your laundry needs.
When we compared the LG to the other machines it however lacked in terms of cleaning, although not by a huge margin. It was the Whirlpool Machine that emerged victorious in our tests in terms of cleaning and ergonomics. The Whirlpool machine also boasts of a much better feature set and special programs for better cleaning of dirty clothes.
